About the Item
Vintage Samarkand (Khotan) Rug
Size: 6'4" × 13'6" (193 × 411 cm)
This exceptional vintage Samarkand rug, woven in East Turkestan during the 1950s, represents the unique artistic synthesis that defines Khotan weaving traditions. With its origins at the cultural crossroads of the Silk Road, this rug exemplifies the harmonious blend of Chinese ornamentation, Central Asian tribal motifs, and Persian design influences.
The field is anchored by three prominent medallions—two elliptical and one octagonal—each framed by crisp geometric flourishes. These motifs are enclosed within a dense field of stylized florals, rosettes, and abstract botanical symbols, rendered in a soft, symmetrical matrix that imparts balance and rhythm.
A rich espresso brown serves as the dominant ground color, offset by an elegant palette of sand, camel, taupe, and ivory. The neutral earth tones give the rug a mellow, time-softened patina while enhancing the fine details of the design. Multiple borders encircle the central field, featuring pomegranate vines, rosette chains, and fret patterns, a characteristic hallmark of Samarkand compositions.
Woven entirely from wool, this rug features a tight, medium-low pile and a supple handle, indicative of both durability and artisanal craftsmanship. It remains in excellent vintage condition with minor age-appropriate wear, adding to its authentic charm.
Whether used in a transitional space, a curated traditional setting, or as a grounding element in a modern interior, this vintage Khotan rug radiates quiet sophistication and cultural depth.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
