About the Item
Vintage Khotan “Samarkand” Rug
Size: 2'7" x 4'5" (78 x 134 cm)
A charming and highly decorative piece, this vintage Samarkand rug from the 1920s embodies the distinctive and eclectic aesthetic of East Turkestan’s Khotan weaving tradition. Produced at the crossroads of several major cultures along the ancient Silk Road, this rug brings together Chinese geometric motifs, Persian floral designs, and Central Asian tribal sensibilities with seamless harmony.
At the heart of the composition lies a soft plum-colored medallion with a scalloped floral motif, radiating from the center of a muted camel-hued field. The surrounding field is enriched with delicate ornamentation: stylized pomegranate trees, lotus blossoms, and subtle cloudbands arranged with symmetrical balance. The interplay of violet, dusty rose, sage green, and pale lavender hues imbues the rug with an inviting, pastel-toned warmth.
Framing the central field is a layered border system that reinforces the piece’s Asian heritage. The inner border features Greco-Roman inspired fretwork corner brackets, while the outermost band dazzles with a rhythmic scrolling vine and rosette motif rendered in shades of amethyst, cocoa, and ivory. This ornate framing creates visual tension and contrast, drawing the eye inward to the contemplative center.
Hand-knotted in wool with a relatively fine weave, this Samarkand rug reflects the refined craftsmanship of early 20th-century Khotan textile artisans. Its compact format and subdued yet vibrant palette make it an ideal accent piece—perfect for a foyer, reading nook, or intimate sitting area.
The rug’s unique character and balanced design testify to its origin in a region where East met West, and tradition met innovation.
With its unique pattern and refined colors, this vintage rug reflects the impeccable taste of Doris Leslie Blau’s selections. Offering both rare, high-end pieces and more accessible options, Doris Leslie Blau presents rugs in a wide spectrum of prices.
