About the Item

Vintage Samarkand Khotan Rug Size: 5'10" × 11'0" (177 × 335 cm) This exquisite vintage Samarkand rug, woven in East Turkestan circa 1945, captures the fusion of Chinese, Persian, and Turkoman influences that define Khotan weaving traditions. Its palette is bold and earthy, centered around a sumptuous chocolate brown field that sets a dramatic stage for the ornate motifs. At the heart of the rug lies an oval medallion in coral red, framed with symmetrical blue cloud bands and stylized florals in ivory and beige. Flanking this medallion are two cream-colored elliptical cartouches containing vase-and-branch motifs, where pomegranates and peony blossoms bloom in rich navy and coral, symbolizing fertility and abundance. A defining element of this rug is its repeating pomegranate motif, branching outward in stylized vines, rendered in soft peach and pale pink. These organic forms evoke Central Asian symbolism while visually balancing the more geometric central design. The tree-like structure of the pomegranates almost resembles a stylized "Tree of Life," a common theme in Silk Road textiles. Surrounding the central field is a multi-tiered border, filled with floral rosettes, traditional fret patterns, and auspicious symbols rendered in soft terracotta, muted rust, and camel. The inner and outer guard borders frame the piece with elegant precision and structure, providing a striking contrast to the flowing central motifs. This rug is hand-knotted with a wool pile and displays an exceptional degree of craftsmanship, typical of mid-20th century Samarkand creations. The pile appears plush, with a soft hand, yet maintains sharpness in its detailing—a testament to the skill of its weavers. Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
