About the Item

As godfathers of oriental carpets, all of history’s weavers owe appreciation to the stepped nomads of Central Asia for introducing their craft to the world. Moving east, many of these nomads settled in East Turkestan, the Westernmost region of modern day China. Finely blending Turkic, Persian and Chinese design elements, Turkic weavers wove distinctive pile carpets with bold colors and designs. Equally decorative and historicall significant, Khotan rugs are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their rare mix of East-meets-West aesthetics. In the present example, one can find a compass-like central medallion acting as a foundational axis for the piece. It is laid over an open-field ivory backdrop and is cornered by wonderful deep blue spandrels. Within the spandrels are various stylized botanical elements adding depth to an otherwise minimalist piece. Framing the field, is a Chinese-influenced border with geometric shields on a bold aubergine background. A fabulous piece with a rare and accommodative size.
