Ladik Prayer Rug, c. 1800
About the Item
Ladik Prayer Rug, circa 1800
Ladik prayer rugs from Central Anatolia are known for their distinctive depressed warp weave and repertoire of design combined with prized Anatolian saturated color. A classic crenelated mihrab niche is drawn with a madder-red ground, as stylized tulips stand above the arch in the Ladik fashion. A boldly drawn ‘gothic’ border frames the piece rendering geometric forms derived from palmette design but in this context seeming almost zoomorphic along a meandering aubergine vine-scroll. Of particular interest to rug enthusiasts is the outer guard row of linked flowers, reminiscent of similar Turkmen weaving traditions from Central Asia.
