Antique Syrian Halab
This rare and majestic Antique Syrian rug originates from Aleppo (Halab), a historic city long celebrated as a cultural crossroads of the Eastern Mediterranean. Woven in the late 19th century, this piece embodies the unique fusion of Ottoman, Persian, and Levantine influences that defined the textile traditions of greater Syria. The rug features a stately medallion-and-pendant floral design, arranged symmetrically across a faded terracotta to madder red field, with elegant palmettes, saz leaves, lotus flowers, and curling vines woven in harmonious tones of soft ivory, muted gold, pale blue, charcoal, and orange. These elements mirror the Persian Isfahan or Kerman court style, but with a distinctive local softness and elegance. The wide border system, composed of layered floral meanders and stylized rosettes on a light ground, adds a stately frame and speaks to the refined craftsmanship of Aleppine workshops. The rug’s overall patina, visible wear, and abrash lend a sense of depth and antique character, making it a piece of great aesthetic and historical value.
