About the Item
This unique antique Tibetan Khaden rug, woven in the early 20th century, presents a rare fusion of traditional Himalayan weaving with floral motifs more commonly associated with Anatolian Oushak carpets. The large-scale floral forms, scrolling vines, and angular stems are drawn in a loose, abstracted style, brought to life by a wonderfully unexpected palette of apricot, coral, indigo, goldenrod, and rose—each softened by age and use. The taupe ground provides an earthy canvas that allows the blossoms to float and glow.
Hand-knotted in wool with a supple, high-pile texture typical of Tibetan rugs, this piece likely emerged from a workshop catering to early Western interest in exotic carpets, at a time when Tibetan weaving was beginning to expand beyond its strictly monastic and domestic use. It remains in nice antique condition, with some scattered pile wear and a slightly irregular shape, all of which contribute to its handmade character and appeal.
This rug would make a standout accent in a quiet sitting area, beneath a favorite chair, or hung on the wall as a striking piece of textile art. Its combination of meditative geometry and joyful color lends it both a calming presence and a vibrant charm.
This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
