Antique Tibetan Rug Takyab

About the Item

This captivating piece is an antique Tibetan Takyab, a decorative and protective forehead ornament for pack animals that were integral to the Tibetan way of life. Crafted with special care, the Takyab served both an aesthetic and a spiritual purpose, believed to shield the animals from negative energies and evil spirits. The central design features the auspicious flaming norbu, or jewel, symbolizing wealth and enlightenment, set against a background of radiant orange, a color revered in Tibetan culture for its association with Buddhism and its protective qualities. Surrounding the norbu are stylized representations of lotus flowers, signifying purity and spiritual growth. The shape of the Takyab, designed to fit snugly on the animal's forehead, is indicative of the piece's practical function as part of the tack. Yet, its ornate decoration reveals its additional role as a talisman, imbued with magical properties to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals during their journeys across the rugged Himalayan terrain. Despite its age, the vibrancy of the colors and the clarity of the symbolic motifs remain striking, a testament to the enduring craftsmanship and cultural significance of such artifacts in the Tibetan tradition. This Takyab is not just a piece of historical tack but a cherished artifact, reflecting the harmonious blend of utility and spirituality that characterizes Tibetan artisanal heritage.

Antique Tibetan Monastic Tiger Rug

Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...
