About the Item

Monumental 1920s Chinese Rug with Imperial Dragons and Auspicious Motifs Size: 10'7" x 14'5" (322 x 439 cm). This grand and visually arresting Chinese rug, dating from the 1920s, is a superb example of early 20th-century Peking craftsmanship infused with imperial symbolism and refined aesthetics. The rug's spacious field is rendered in a golden-honey tone softened by natural age, providing a warm and dignified ground for its highly symbolic design. Dominating the composition are five prominent roundels, each enclosing a dynamic blue dragon—a revered emblem of power, protection, and imperial authority in Chinese mythology. These sinuous creatures are beautifully detailed with finely articulated scales and expressive faces, coiled amidst stylized clouds within undulating circular frames. Interspersed among the medallions are Taoist and Buddhist auspicious symbols including the endless knot, musical stone (qing), flaming pearl, books, fans, and scrolls—each conveying a blessing of good fortune, knowledge, longevity, or harmony. Floating cloud motifs and stylized bats (fu) further emphasize blessings of happiness and prosperity. The border is a masterclass in classical Chinese design, featuring a multi-stripe composition. A prominent inner band of pearl fretwork (also known as the "Greek key" or "leiwen" pattern) lends architectural strength and visual rhythm. This is flanked by a row of ruyi heads and an outer layer of stylized mountain peaks, reminiscent of Buddhist "mountain" symbols, reinforcing themes of spiritual ascent and endurance. The entire composition is executed in a subdued palette of navy blue, soft celadon, faded aubergine, and pale lavender atop the golden base, offering both contrast and harmony. The wool pile is dense and lustrous, displaying the technical finesse and artistic integrity of the Peking weaving tradition. With its monumental scale and potent symbolism, this antique Chinese carpet is ideal for interiors that celebrate culture, heritage, and timeless artistry. Whether showcased in a grand entry, library, or formal salon, it is sure to captivate and inspire.
