About the Item

Elegant Chinese rug dating from the 1940s, made with great craftsmanship measuring 187 x 73. The deep blue background provides the backdrop for a figurative scene of extraordinary visual and symbolic impact. The center of the composition depicts Emperor Qianlong, one of the most important rulers of the Qing Dynasty, in the fourth year of his reign, as indicated by inscriptions in Chinese characters on the carpet. The figures, are all depicted above soft clouds, typical of Chinese imperial iconography. Traditional symbols of good luck and power appear at the top of the carpet. The rug is hand-knotted in fine wool, with great attention to detail and color. A rare and fascinating artifact, combining artistic, historical and symbolic value, ideal for collectors and oriental art enthusiasts. Qianlong (Peking, Sept. 25, 1711 - Peking, Feb. 7, 1799) was emperor of China, the fifth of the Manchu Qing dynasty and the fourth of the same dynasty to rule over China.
