Fragment of the Antique Tiffany Chinese Carpet with Lotus Flowers
Located in Milan, IT
The only huge carpet known to have left the Imperial Palace in Beijing's Forbidden City, formerly in the Perenchio collection, is the famous Tiffany carpet, 9.99 metres long and once 9.68 metres wide, but since reduced to 7.20 metres wide. The carpet was originally made in three parts to fit around the columns of an unknown hall, and was reportedly last used in China in the private temple of the Empress Dowager Cixi. It was purchased for Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York, who owned it for more than thirty years. The Tiffany carpet is currently attributed to the end of the Ming dynasty and is thought to have been made in the first part of the 17th century. The field pattern is composed of a repeating design of rows of lotus flowers on a soft beige ground, originally deep red, overlaid in the centre with a medallion formed by a blue line edged in ivory and pinched in the four corners. The field is enclosed by two borders on the same colour, which reappears beyond the borders to create a wide band around the outer edge. The inner border is composed of a lattice of stepped squares filled with a swastika, with a large rosette at each intersection. The outer border is a double version of the swastika fret. A section of the field is shown here, and a few other fragments survive.
The Tiffany carpet clearly forms a link between the carpets made during the late 16th century and those made in the late 17th century. Examples with an identical flower design or the same specific ‘heavy’ weave are now referred to as the ‘Tiffany’ type after this most important carpet. Other carpets of this type include one in the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City and one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Tiffany type...

Chinese Art Deco, Soft Pastel Antique Carpet
Located in WYNNUM, QLD
Chinese Art Deco
Chinese Art Deco circa 1930
Measures: 10 ft. 1 inch x 8 ft 1 inch
Acquired from a Sydney estate
This genre of hard-wearing carpets has gained significant designer and consumer interest over the past ten or more years. We acquired this piece in Sydney recently for its uncommon soft pastel colours and especially its fine artistry and hand etching of classic Chinese design elements. In our opinion as art dealers this fine piece strikes the right balance between space and graceful embroidery/patterns we seek in an ideal example . The understated mauve and pale green combine to create a soothing sense of calm acting as a base for the fine embroidery, which please examine.
In truth the oft used title of this type of carpet is a misnomer – they are not, design wise, art deco. They only happened to be made in the 1920’s and mainly the 1930's - coincident to the Art Deco movement which stressed minimal and forceful angular images, like the architecture of the same name. True Art deco carpets are very rare and costly , and feature austere, minimalist designs . But the name has stuck, and at least is accurate as to the period .
The Chinese look , a collaborative style, took off and was popular primarily in America and Europe during this period . Key designers such as Walter Nichols worked during the time with weavers and small manufacturers in China .
In recent years this genre of carpet in good condition has been steadily appreciating , and is thus an actual investment ; good examples are increasingly difficult to find , and they do represent a period of specific artistry which has not been successfully duplicated . At 90`-100 years of age they are approaching the " antique" category .
This piece was purchased from the owner of one of northern Sydney's 60-70 distinguished Art Deco homes where it looked beautiful, offset by an AD fireplace( angular, austere) surround in marble colours ( predominately pinks and greens ) which "mirrored " the carpet .
Though it is a matter of personal taste, of course, the muted pastel colours in this piece are more elegant and dignified than many of the more bright -even garish - examples found in this genre , in our opinion, and much harder to find - one criterion for investment value .
Also, such a carpet will work well in a wider variety of environments, stylistically, from an interior design perspective: whether living, dining, games room, library , large foyer or bedroom . In other words, one does not need a " Chinese" or Asian themed overall design for this piece to wonderfully complement the decor - in the way that a single Chinese wall scroll...

Central Asian Rugs & Carpets:
Central Asia is a vast area stretching from Northeastern Persia to western China, and from northern Afghanistan to the southern edge of Russia. The carpets can be usefully divided into three groups: the nomadic Turkmen rugs of Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, and northeastern Persia; the non-Turkmen tribal pieces from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kirghizstan; and the urban creations of Khotan, Yarkand, and Kashgar, oasis cities of Western China (Xinjiang Province).
Commercially, the most important group is from Khotan, the easternmost of the Chinese Turkestan cities. The craft of rug weaving is primarily in the hands of Muslim Uighurs. Khotan carpets mix purely Central Asian design themes with Chinese elements. Native Khotan devices include pomegranate trees, upright flowers, round medallions, and yellow or red grounds. Chinese motives include triangular fretwork corners, swastika fretwork, and Yun-Tsao Tou (clouds and rain) diagonally striped polychrome borders. Cotton foundations, asymmetrical (Persian) knots, and medium weaves are standard. Some vintage Khotan are in horizontal, pictorial layouts with multiple various vases and plants. Saphs (multiple prayer niche panel carpets) are also a Khotan specialty. Others employ stepped and layered lozenge medallions, singly or in pairs. Still others, almost all antique, feature a stylized version of the allover Persian Herati design. Many of the oldest pieces employ brown wool wefts. Antique and vintage Khotans are almost always in the k’ang (double square) layout, conforming to the local household plans. Only relatively recently has the 6’ by 12’ or 7’ by 16’ format been replaced by the 9’ by 12’ size. As a result, an antique room size Khotan carpet is very uncommon. Reds are cinnamon, tomato and rust, never wine reds, crimson, or scarlet. Yarkand, farther west on the old Silk Road specializes in multi-medallion long carpets while Kashgar, farthest west and most under Persian influence, has traditionally knotted allover pattern pieces with finer weaves, often with silk piles, and enriched with medal thread, on cotton foundations. Extant Kashgars go back to the 17th century, but the carpet craft in Chinese Turkestan must be much older as fragments have been recovered from local tombs of the early C.E. period. Kashgars are the rarest of all East Turkestan rugs. Most available vintage East Turkestan carpets are interwar Khotans, many with pleasingly soft decorative palettes.
The non-Turkmen nomads include the Kazakh, Kirghiz, Uzbek, and Karakalpak groups. Like the Turkmen, they were once all seasonally migratory, dwelling in round felt tents (yurts), but have been settled, at least partially, in the villages, and have taken up crafts and agriculture instead of sheep herding. As a result, carpet production has transitioned from domestic tent use to commercial sale, but the roots of long traditions are still evident. The Uzbeks weave...
