About the Item
Large hand-knotted rug in wool, signed and dated 1986, 1987. The design is full of energy, with a deep blue ground and many surreal details. You see snakes, birds, trees in bloom, winged figures, stars and abstract shapes, almost like a dreamscape from the 1980s. The border in lighter tones holds the composition together with clouds and geometric patterns.
It is a finely knotted rug, dense and regular, which you can clearly see from the back. The high knot count allows for sharp detailing, and the wool has a soft, rich surface. The carpet is quite thick and heavy. The blue dye has kept its depth over the years, a sign of good materials. Edges and fringes are well finished and 100% good condition.
In the border there are Chinese characters woven in, symbols for longevity, happiness, fortune and harmony. These give the piece an extra layer of meaning.
The rug is signed and dated, but the maker is unknown. That makes it even more intriguing, and very much in line with the playful, postmodern spirit of the 1980s. A decorative textile, but also a piece of art. Very much in the style of Matisse and Jawlenski.
