About the Item

Vintage Samarkand (Khotan) Rug Size: 6'0" × 12'2" (182 × 370 cm) Boldly expressive and unmistakably unique, this vintage Samarkand rug from the 1930s captures the rich multicultural heritage of East Turkestan weaving traditions. The elongated field is dominated by three grand medallions—two lobed ochre roundels flanking a central medallion enclosed in a soft gray-blue oval. This tripartite composition is framed against a vivid crimson ground, creating a dramatic visual dialogue between form and color. Surrounding the medallions are a profusion of decorative motifs: stylized pomegranates symbolizing abundance, rosettes, cloud bands, and ancient geometric fretwork, all interspersed with small guardian animal figures rendered in golden saffron and black. These diverse elements reflect the blend of Chinese, Central Asian, and Persian influences that define Khotan artistry. The borders are particularly eye-catching. A wide outer band in warm saffron yellow features jagged zigzag motifs reminiscent of mountain peaks or protective talismans, filled with multicolored chevrons. Inside this dynamic frame lies a ribbon of scrolling rosettes and angular cornerpieces, enhancing the visual rhythm of the rug while preserving balance and symmetry. Expertly handwoven in wool, the rug’s robust yet refined palette—dominated by deep red, ochre, olive, and slate gray—has mellowed gracefully over time, lending it a warm, antique patina. Its durability and expressive design make it a compelling choice for collectors or interior spaces seeking a bold, historical statement. A perfect embodiment of Silk Road aesthetics, this vintage Samarkand rug celebrates centuries of cultural exchange with an energy that still feels modern today. This exquisite rug is part of the diversified Doris Leslie Blau selections, renowned for its curated selection of antique, vintage, and contemporary rugs.
