About the Item

This antique handwoven wool Agra rug features an ivory field with an overall design of light purple and shaded brown dense floral and palmette vine around a column of similarly colored vase motifs issuing floral motifs and part palmettes, the open spandrels similar, in a broad fox-brown border of ivory palmettes linked by meandering floral vine between light purple and shaded ivory floral vine stripes, plain outer shaded ivory stripe. Agra rugs are named after the Indian city of Agra, home of the infamous the Taj Mahal. A center for weaving, Agra’s workshops produced elegant antique carpets that have been praised for their thorough originality and workmanship. Antique carpets from Agra are greatly sought after by collectors, earning their rank among some of the finest decorative Indian carpets.
