About the Item

The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces and are often of massive dimensions. This outstanding example is distinguished by one of the most coveted patterns known for the dhurrie repertoire, consisting of parallel rows of octagons in alternating shades of ivory and light blue, with offset rows of interconnected diamonds in dark blue. This network is framed by two parallel rows of stepped diamonds on a dark blue ground, the outer one in ivory and the inner row in soft peach. The beautiful square format makes this example ideal for different living room settings, gracing the sofa area and allowing the placement of coffee tables on the sides.
