About the Item

The city of Agra, located in the Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, is universally recognized as the home of the Taj Mahal. Carpet production was introduced to this area on a grand scale under the rule of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great in the 16th Century. Up to that point, Indian artisans primarily produced inlaid stonework, jewelry, miniature paintings, and lightweight textiles. Respected Persian weavers, who flourished under the rules of Shah Tahmasp and Shah Abbas of the Safavid Dynasty, were brought into these newly established court workshops to introduce the designs and oversee the weaving of pile carpets. Under British rule in the 19th Century, this industry was revived with the assistance of American entrepreneurs, resulting in the manufacture of larger made to order carpets whose designs were inspired from not only their predecessors, but from those of classical Turkish carpets as well. A prayer rug is placed between the ground and the worshipper for cleanliness during the various positions of Islamic prayer. When praying, a niche, representing the mihrab of a mosque, located at the top of the field of the rug, must be pointed to the Islamic center for prayer, Mecca. 6' 3" x 4' 0"
