About the Item

This antique, circa 1890, Indian Agra rug has a golden-yellow and shaded biscuit brown field with an overall design of scrolling ivory arabesque vine linking and enclosing small burgundy-red flowerheads and shield and ivory floral motifs around a bold sea-blue cusped panel across the centre of the field with delicate floral vine and paired burgundy-red flowerheads, flanked at each end with rows three similarly colored but decreasing in size palmettes each containing a central flowerhead and issuing stems terminating in a flowerhead of burgundy or ivory, in a broad ivory border of burgundy flowerheads and leafy delicate vine, plain outer burgundy-red stripe. Agra rugs, originating from the city of Agra in northern India, are renowned for their intricate designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Traditionally woven from fine wool or silk, these rugs feature patterns inspired by Persian and Mughal art, often incorporating floral motifs, medallions, and elaborate borders. Agra rugs are known for their durability and vibrant colors, achieved through the use of natural dyes. These rugs have been produced since the Mughal era, and their elegance and historical significance continue to make them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers worldwide.
