About the Item

This antique, circa 1900, Agra rug has a burgundy-red field with an overall design of sea-green, ivory and dusty-pink palmette and floral vine with paired perching birds, in a sea-green border of burgundy-red, ivory and pistachio-green palmettes alternating with angular cusped leaves and a floral stem cartouches between sandy-yellow floral vine stripes. Agra rugs, originating from the city of Agra in northern India, are renowned for their intricate designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Traditionally woven from fine wool or silk, these rugs feature patterns inspired by Persian and Mughal art, often incorporating floral motifs, medallions, and elaborate borders. Agra rugs are known for their durability and vibrant colors, achieved through the use of natural dyes. These rugs have been produced since the Mughal era, and their elegance and historical significance continue to make them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers worldwide.
