About the Item
It took five months for Usman to create his magnificent Manchaha Carpet, a labour of love that reflects a part of his life and his inner thoughts. Throughout the process, his mind wandered through various inspirations, but once his heart went on something he loved, truly illuminated his masterpiece.
Initially, he wove a swing from a school park he used to pass by every day. He remembered the sounds of children playing and enjoying themselves, which inspired him to highlight the swing in the middle bottom of the carpet. To make the carpet shine, he wove road studs on a grey background using his wool and silk yarns. He also captured plant motifs from beautiful paintings he saw at a temple in his jail ward and a wild medicinal plant that grew at the entrance of his workshop. In addition, he wove candles, planters, and a string of flowers. The most hilarious element of his carpet are the little spiders! He explained that he saw a spider dangling on his loom while he was weaving, so he incorporated it too saying that the spider must have come to visit on his loom.
Halfway through his creation took an unexpected turn with the advent of the festive season! The festival of Diwali arrived. Although Usman came from a different community and did not celebrate Diwali, he was so drawn to the festive atmosphere and the way people lightened their homes with the glow of diyas (oil lamps). So, he hand-knotted a thousand diyas with his shiny wool and silk yarns in different colors, capturing the light of joy on his carpet. He named his Manchaha, ""Jyoti,"" which means ""Divine Light."" This beautiful gesture underscored the idea that festivals go beyond religious boundaries, uniting humanity in the shared celebration of light and joy.
