Late 19th Century Indian Deccan Rug
About the Item
Rugs woven in the Deccan, the southern peninsula of India south of the Narmada River, exhibit colorations and motifs independent from those woven in the northern part of the country. This is often attributed to the close economic, cultural, and religious ties the region has with Persia and Turkey. It is not uncommon to see asymmetric positioning of floral elements combined with a dramatic use of open space to frame them. This unusual rug's design is inspired by a traditional 16th Century Herati pattern that originated in Persia. In this example, the scale of the pattern has been dramatically enlarged in relation to the size of the carpet, providing ample space between the elements. The coloration of this rug, with an ivory field accented by touches of amber, within a robin's egg blue Kufic border, adds to the character of this unusual weaving. 8' 0" x 5' 2"
