Handwoven in a NZ wool flatweave, this custom rug sample is an exciting addition to the Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian rug collection—a contemporary reimagining of Swedish minimalism and vintage rugs and textiles of Rollakan and Rya traditions.
On the design:
In this custom rug sample, color blocks in rust-red create bold linear elements that provide visual punctuation against the natural beige ground, while subtle pale blue accent lines introduce delicate counterpoint. The design employs interrupted horizontal bands of varying lengths and widths, creating a deliberate asymmetry that suggests modernist influences from mid-century Scandinavian design. Admirers of the craft and keen eyes may further note a subtle inspiration from one of the celebrated Kingswood rugs by Loja Saarinen for the Cranbrook institute—a legendary name in weaving among the many that inspired this bold new take on the aesthetic. This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike.
Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
