Handwoven in a wool flatweave, this custom rug sample is an exciting addition to the Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian rug collection—a contemporary reimagining of Swedish minimalism and vintage rugs and textiles of Rollakan and Rya traditions.
On the design:
This custom rug sample features a distinctive bifurcated structure that creates visual dialogue between solid and linear elements. The left section features rhythmic solid rectangular blocks in muted slate-blue against a pale ground, creating deliberate vertical cadence. This contrasts with the right section's delicate horizontal striping that gradually diminishes in intensity from left to right, suggesting movement and spatial depth. This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike.
Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
