About the Item

The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces and are often of massive dimensions. This unique example is distinguished by a large chequerboard pattern in alternating white and lilac squares, framed by a yellow and teal green Greek-fret border motif. The chromatic combination results in a truly whimsical dhurrie of great character, which has the power of transforming a room into a setting with a unique personality.

Vintage Moroccan Modernist Textural Ivory Cotton Square Rug
Located in Milan, IT
Custom woven in Tangiers in the late 1970s for the Rue De Grenelle Parisian apartment of someone very close to Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the rug is distinguished by an infinite repeat pattern of diamonds, which are knotted in raised pile just like the border. The rug's unique, sturdy texture is also augmented by the fact that it is woven entirely in cotton. Wonderfully tactile and subtle, it speaks the language of Paris chic.
