About the Item

A very unusual Berber rug from the Boujad region, located on the foothills of the central High Atlas mountains of Morocco, characterized by a bold, brushwork-like pattern of stacked niche-like elements culminating in a central niche leading into a green cave. Hand-knotted by exclusively using silky industrial yarns, the ancient modernity of its iconography is quite characteristic of this area as well as of that of the nearby Azilal region. Works such as this piece were almost unknown to the west until recent times and represent the most authentic facet of Berber woven art.
