Vintage American Hand Hooked Area Rug with a Floral Pattern in Pastel Colors
Located in Barrington, IL
Beautiful hand-hooked area rug from the mid 1900s. The rug has a floral pattern set in a pale green background. The center medallion is a bouquet of flowers in pastel color including pale green, yellow, ivory and pink. The edge of the rug is a pale brown framing the design. The essence of “American Folk Art '' the hand-hooked rugs were generally created by the individuals using simple tools and material recycling for use in their homes. The simplicity in the design and sometimes the naiveness of the figures adds to the beauty and the charm of this vintage folk art creation in our Americana Collection.
Antique and Vintage Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. When it comes to true simplicity and artistic creativity Antique Hooked Rugs have some of the best representations. The tradition of Hooked Rug started in New England. “Hooking” started as a hobby for the farmers in the long and dark cold winter nights of North East States in the US in the early 1800s. Hooked rugs were made as functional pieces for the home either as a bed cover or small carpet for the floor.

Vintage Native American Navajo Square Rug in Ivory, Yellow, Rust, Blue, Black
Located in Barrington, IL
An exceptionally rare square-format Navajo rug, handwoven in the Southwestern United States during the third quarter of the 20th century, this vintage textile is a superb example of Native American weaving and Southwestern design heritage.
Its striking composition features a dazzling, eye-catching pattern rendered in horizontal rows, each separated by solid bands for dramatic visual rhythm. The rug's field showcases a beautifully balanced palette of classic earth-tone Southwestern colors—including ivory, indigo blue, yellow, and rust—infused with rich cultural symbolism and geometric precision.
Crafted using traditional flat-weave techniques, this piece is woven with a wool body on a cotton foundation, characteristic of authentic Navajo rugs. The dyes are believed to be derived from natural, organic sources native to the weavers' tribal lands, contributing to the depth and warmth of the color palette.
Designs in Navajo rugs are more than ornamental—they are expressions of spiritual beliefs, cosmology, and cultural storytelling passed through generations of master artisans. The rare square shape enhances the piece’s desirability, offering unique versatility for use as a statement floor covering or textile wall art in thoughtfully curated spaces.
This rug is ideal for collectors, interior designers, and enthusiasts of indigenous American craftsmanship, representing both artistic mastery and cultural legacy.

Vintage American Hooked Rug in Fruit Blocks Pattern
Located in Barrington, IL
Vintage American hand hooked area rug in a fruit block pattern circa the early 20th century. The very unique and beautiful design in this vintage folk art hooked rug consists of a 5 x 3 block pattern each containing the design of a different fruit. The design is set on a tan color background with a green and brown border for the rug and blocks. The colors for the fruit in each block are vibrant and make them stand out. Beautiful piece of Americana folk art to be used as a table top display or a wall art.
The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity.
