About the Item

A Navajo Late Classic (pre or early reservation period) with a rare Spider Woman Opening at the center. Provenance: Private Collection, Lyons, Colorado The serape was originally owned by the collector's great-great grandfather, Charles A. Lillie (1857-1941), a mining engineer in Angel's Camp, California. According to the family history, the serape was given to Charles Lillie by the Navajo Nation as a gift, in gratitude for the engineering work he did for the Navajo. Yarns and Dyes: There are four red yarns used as wefts in the serape. The dark red yarn is a three-ply machine-spun knitting yarn, also known as Saxony yarn, dyed with cochineal. The medium red and plum red yarns are machine-spun knitting yarns, also known as Saxony yarns, dyed with cochineal. The fourth red yarn is a medium red raveled bayeta dyed with cochineal. There are two orange yarns used as wefts in the serape. One orange yarn is slightly darker than the other. Both of the orange yarns are raveled American flannel dyed with synthetic dyes. The green yarns are handspun Churro fleece dyed with a combination of indigo and vegetal dyes, probably chamisa or rabbit brush. The yellow yarns are handspun Churro fleece dyed with vegetal dyes, probably chamisa or rabbit brush. The green and yellow yarns are similar to the green and yellow yarns that appear in other late classic Navajo serapes woven between 1865 and 1870. The blue yarns are handspun Churro fleece dyed with indigo. The white yarns are un-dyed handspun Churro fleece. The white yarns used as warps are also un-dyed handspun Churro fleece. This serape’s combination of machine-spun knitting yarns dyed with cochineal, raveled bayeta dyed with cochineal, raveled American Flannel dyed with synthetic dyes, green handspun yarns dyed with indigo and vegetal dyes, yellow handspun yarns dyed with vegetal dyes, midnight blue handspun yarns dyed with indigo, and un-dyed white handspun yarns is consistent with combinations of raveled, plied, and handspun yarns which appear in other late classic Navajo serapes woven between 1865 and 1870.
