About the Item

This 3x4 vintage needlepoint rug is a rare signed piece and pictorial design, handmade with wool circa 1960-1970. On the Design: Dominated by a bald eagle with its wings spread wide in mid-flight, this needlepoint rug captures a moment of triumphant national identity. Clutched in its talons is a flowing banner inscribed with the foundational date “1776” and the word “Liberty,” referencing the birth of the United States and the ideals on which it was founded. The eagle perches atop a stylized American flag, emphasizing the themes of unity and freedom. The sky-blue background offers a serene contrast, allowing the bold reds, whites, and earthy tones of the eagle to stand out with vivid clarity. Olive branches rise behind the eagle, symbolizing peace—a classic emblem in American iconography. Keen eyes will note the signature is woven into the lower-left corner; both the year and two sets of initials. These may reference the artist or workshop, though “SSK” may refer to the “slip slip knit” technique as well. Admirers of the craft will appreciate how rare it is to discover pictorial rugs in antique and vintage curations. They’re among the richest stories in any provenance, just as this needlepoint is a piece of Americana and charm. Condition: This vintage American needlepoint rug and tapestry has some visible distress, and an added backing to preserve its good condition. It’s best suited for wall-hanging projects—available as is.

Antique Mexican Saltillo Serape Flat-Woven Kilim in Royal Blue, Red, Ivory
Located in Barrington, IL
This vintage Mexican Saltillo Serape, woven circa the late 19th to early 20th century, is a striking example of northern Mexican textile artistry from the Coahuila region. Crafted using traditional flat-woven kilim techniques, this historic piece features the signature “royal blue” background, accented with vibrant red, black, ivory, and tan design elements. At the heart of the serape lies a large lozenge-shaped central medallion, intricately woven and flanked by four smaller medallions, each contributing to the balanced and rhythmic Saltillo design. A display sleeve has been sewn onto the back, allowing for easy installation as wall art or tapestry. Whether displayed in a Southwestern, boho, or historic interior, this antique serape offers a rare opportunity to own a museum-worthy textile with deep cultural roots and timeless aesthetic appeal.
