About the Item

Vintage American hand hooked rug in a wonderful depiction of a Dodo bird mounted on a frame. The Dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, which is east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The rug has a delightful design and colors. We are intrigued with the novelty and the imagination of the maker in creating such a wonderful and rare design in great colors that would make this piece a wonderful wall art. The American hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were made with recycled old clothing and feed sack material. The material was washed and then cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity.
