About the Item

Antique Yei Navajo Rug, Early 20th Century In Navajo mythology, the Yei are a group of deities who act as mediators between humans and the Great Spirit. The Yei are also known as the Diyin Diné'e or Holy People, and are associated with the forces of nature. The Yei are said to preside over forces like the weather and the cycle between day and night and can be forces for good or evil. The Yei symbol is a pictorial representation of square-headed female dancers facing outward holding feathers. In Navajo mythology, the Yei spirits mediated between the Great Spirit and humans. The first Navajo rug depicting holy people appeared during the 1890s. Additional Information: Dimensions: 2'5" W x 4'10" L Origin: North America Period: Early 20th Century Rug ID: 19735

Bold red, burgundy, and black motifs form the medallions, framed elegantly by narrow border stripes at each end in coordinating burgundy and black. Expertly flat woven in wool on a traditional cotton foundation, this rug reflects the skill and cultural heritage of Navajo weavers, who use natural organic dyes sourced from the landscapes around their tribal lands. The result is a beautifully rich color palette that remains vibrant and timeless. The geometric designs and symbolic patterns in Navajo rugs are deeply meaningful, often representing spiritual beliefs, storytelling traditions, and a connection to nature.
