About the Item
76924 Antique Persian Sarouk Farahan Rug, 04'00 x 06'08. A resplendent vision of Persian artistry, this hand-knotted wool antique Sarouk Farahan rug unfolds like a blooming garden enclosed within the architecture of sacred geometry. Woven in the early 20th century, it carries forth the legacy of the Farahan district—renowned for producing rugs of exceptional balance, clarity, and refinement. At its heart lies a luminous sky blue square medallion, adorned with symmetrical floral sprays and palmettes, a striking jewel cradled by an navy blue backdrop that transitions into a curvilinear ivory field—like a window into Eden framed by cascading vinery and blossoms.
The surrounding design radiates with lyrical movement. Stylized flowers bloom along spindly branches, rising in mirrored symmetry like trees of life, crowned by buds of crimson, sapphire, pink, and soft celadon green. These elements speak to themes of fertility, spiritual ascent, and eternal renewal—motifs deeply rooted in Persian cosmology. The jagged outline of the ivory field, reminiscent of the flame-like flame palmette designs seen in classical Safavid court rugs, adds a sense of drama and visual dynamism, drawing the eye into the pulsating rhythm of nature tamed through form.
The corner spandrels of this Sarouk Farahan rug are exquisitely composed, offering a rich visual counterpoint to the central medallion. Set against a vibrant red backdrop, each spandrel is adorned with intricate botanical motifs—scrolling vines, lotus rosettes, serrated leaves, and delicate floral sprays—that echo the design language of the main field while asserting their own spatial rhythm. These crimson quadrants act as visual anchors, balancing the composition and drawing the eye outward, reinforcing the grandeur of the ivory field. Their lush ornamentation adds a layer of ornamental depth, evoking the natural abundance of Persian gardens while maintaining the structural integrity that defines the Farahan aesthetic.
Framing this vibrant inner world is a lush main border of crimson and indigo rosettes, linked by delicate vine-scrolls that seem to echo the whispers of old Persian poetry. This border is flanked by finely woven carnation meander guard bands, each carrying motifs of protection and continuity. The balance of formal structure and flourishing natural forms creates a harmonious tension—reflecting the Persian ideal that beauty lies in the interplay between order and exuberance, geometry and growth.
This antique Sarouk Farahan rug is not only a masterpiece of design, but a woven chronicle of cultural legacy. Its palette—vivid yet dignified, its form—symmetric yet organic, and its craftsmanship—meticulous and soulful, all coalesce into a piece that transcends time. Whether laid in a curated collector’s study or a refined interior seeking storied warmth, it brings with it the quiet dignity and enduring grace of Persia’s golden age of rug weaving.

Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks.
In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
