About the Item

This antique, circa 1930, Persian Heriz rug has a soft tomato-red field with an angular polychrome floral and leafy vine around a central charcoal-black lozenge medallion with palmette pendants containing a central tomato-red lozenge medallion with a central rosette issuing angular floral motifs outlined in a caramel narrow stripe and surrounded by further floral motifs, the ivory spandrels each with bold serrated polychrome leaves and inward facing flowerhead surrounded by a broad red and sky-blue serrated part-lozenges all surrounded by a further sky-blue serrated band enclosing charcoal-black serrated leaves, in a broad charcoal-black border of polychrome turtle-palmettes linked by angular palmette and floral vines between pistachio-yellow floral vine stripes. Heriz rugs, crafted in the Heriz region of northwest Iran, are renowned for their durability and distinctive geometric designs. Unlike the more fluid, curvilinear patterns of Persian rugs, Heriz rugs feature bold, angular motifs, often with a large central medallion and stylized floral elements. These rugs are typically made with a robust wool pile, which gives them a thick and sturdy texture. Their earthy tones, combined with vibrant reds, blues, and creams, create a striking contrast. Popular in Western markets, Heriz rugs are valued for their artistic craftsmanship and longevity.
