About the Item

Antique Islamic Prayer rug (Sajjadah), Kashan, Persia, early 20th century. A fine natural dyed shiny wool in a dense Persian knot in short pile on an all wool foundation. An intricate directional Mughal Prayer design combining the Persian Herati floral design on the lower third of the rug and sacred script of Kufic design. This type of design that has Qur’anic inscriptions in the border, and the names of Allah in the spandrels is after the famous group of carpets thought to have been a diplomatic gift from the Safavid Shah ‘Abbas I to the Ottoman Sultan Murad III in the late 16th century. The floral base highlights the protective function of the sacred script, so that the user would not step on the upper portion and violate the text. The niche is composed of a deep red field with multicolored continuous floral lotus Herati vine design. The niche is outlined in a white band of Qur’anic verse in blue. The upper surround has symmetrical spandrels in brown, dark blue, pink, green, yellow, light blue, white and deep red fields each containing names of Allah. The borders start with floral designs near the base and turn into continuous Qur’anic verse on the upper 2/3 of the design. The major border has a cream field and the minor borders have a field of dark blue. Two labels on backside. Condition: Excellent. Measuring: 58 in. x 36 in. (147.5 x 91.5cm) 6 lbs. 2 oz.
