About the Item

79271 Antique Persian Borchelou Hamadan Rug, 02'01 x 03'00. In the world of Persian weaving, where every knot tells a story and every motif carries a whisper of the past, this hand knotted wool antique Persian Borchelou Hamadan rug emerges as a rare jewel—an heirloom of cultivated taste and unyielding character. Woven in the rugged foothills surrounding the ancient city of Hamadan, the Borchelou subregion has long been celebrated for producing some of the finest, most durable wool in all of Iran. This precious rug, with its luxuriously lustrous pile and intimate scale, is a testament to that enduring legacy—a piece not merely of art, but of cultural continuity. The composition unfolds like a poem in saturated tones of madder red, indigo blue, saffron gold, and emerald green. A pair of stylized ewers, flanking each end of the field, evoke Persian rituals of hospitality and abundance—symbolic offerings from a timeless garden. Intertwined vines, rosettes, and geometric florals swell in visual harmony, echoing the rhythms of nature while conjuring an air of sophisticated rusticity. The hand of the village weaver is evident in every deliberate asymmetry, lending the work a human warmth no machine could replicate. Framed by a powerful border adorned with floral meanders and protective amulets, the piece exudes a quiet strength rooted in centuries of tradition. To the discerning collector or design connoisseur, this exclusive work of art offers not just visual pleasure, but narrative prestige. The Borchelou name, whispered in specialist circles, represents a pedigree of quality that few other Hamadan districts rival. It’s a mark of discernment, a choice that reflects both an appreciation for textile heritage and a reverence for the authentic. Such pieces are rarely found in this state of preservation, their wool pile glowing with an inner luminosity that speaks to ethical craftsmanship, resilience, and natural artistry—a quietly radical counterpoint to today’s disposable design ethos. Whether layered in a refined library, draped beside a curated gallery wall, or set as a statement in an intimate vestibule, this Borchelou Hamadan rug does more than decorate—it dignifies. It invites conversation, slows the gaze, and reminds us of a time when beauty was earned through labor, patience, and love of land. In a world of abundance, it is pieces like this—scarce, storied, and soulful—that still command reverence and bestow legacy. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 02'01 x 03'00. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
