Antique Persian Kerman Runner

About the Item

The city and province of Kerman is geographically isolated in the great desert of southern Persia. An industry of both shawl and carpet production has flourished there since the Safavid Dynasty of the sixteenth century. Carpets produced here, once commissioned by the Shahs, came under the control of foreign industry in the early twentieth century. The fine weave of these carpets promotes the utilization of intricate curvilinear floral patterns rendered in a wide range of colors. Distinctive red tones are sourced from cochineal, an insect indigenous to the region that produces magnificent hues of magenta and coral. This beautiful runner measuring 17' 5" x 2' 10" has an overall floral pattern on a sky-blue field. In excellent overall condition.
