About the Item

78983 Antique Red Persian Sarouk Rug, 10'01 x 15'09. This hand-knotted wool antique Persian Sarouk rug is a grand testament to the artistry and timeless beauty of Persian weaving traditions. Its majestic size, commanding a space with elegance, reflects the rich history of Sarouk rugs, which have been crafted in the villages of central Iran for centuries. Known for their durability and exquisite designs, Sarouk rugs were highly prized by both Persian nobility and collectors around the world, making them a symbol of sophistication and cultural refinement. The saturated red field of this Persian Sarouk rug serves as a vibrant backdrop for an intricate floral pattern that bursts forth in a dance of natural beauty. Stylized floral vases, blooming palmettes, hyacinth, lotus blossoms, serrated leaves, rosettes, and delicate vine tendrils weave across the surface in a symmetrical arrangement, creating a sense of harmony and balance. Each flower is rendered in luxurious detail, using a rich color palette of navy blues and earthy browns, lending an air of regal elegance to the piece. These botanical elements are not merely decorative but are steeped in symbolic meaning, often representing prosperity, fertility, and the beauty of nature in Persian culture. Framing the central field is a striking main border composed of intricate palmettes and floral patterns set against a midnight blue background. The floral motifs in the border, including rosettes and lotus flowers, echo the central design while offering a striking contrast in color, enhancing the visual depth of the rug. This border is flanked by finely woven triple guard borders that provide additional layers of intricacy and structure, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship that has made Sarouk rugs famous throughout history. This antique Persian Sarouk rug is more than just a decorative piece; it is a celebration of Persian heritage and the mastery of its artisans. Whether placed in a formal living room, grand foyer, or luxurious dining space, this rug will bring a sense of history and grandeur to any interior. With its vibrant colors and intricate design, it offers not only aesthetic beauty but also a tangible connection to the rich cultural tapestry of Persian art and craftsmanship, making it a treasured addition to any collection. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
