Beautiful and decorative earth tone oversized antique Persian Sultanabad rug, origin: Persia, circa late 19th century. Size: 12 ft x 21 ft 8 in (3.66 m x 6.6 m)
Warm corals and earthy browns work together to create this Persian antique Sultanabad rug that combines large scale formal design elements in a way that still manages to retain its tribal rug roots. This magnificent antique Persian carpet retains its sense of balance by using an all-over design, that focuses is on the larger scale arts and crafts inspired palmettes that line the field.
The design of the this antique decorative rug uses time honored tribal symbols including leaves, palmettes, and lotus flowers. Each of the symbols has a special meaning, but they can have different interpretations depending on the region or town in which the antique rug was created. The symbols tie the oversized antique Persian Sultanabad rug to the craftsmanship of local artisans and their selection of color and arrangement.
The palette of this antique oversize rug features soft neutral color shades of brown, salmon, soft greens, grays and ivory. These beautiful colors blended and work together in a way that emphasizes the stately arrangement of the various large scale design elements. While the colors create only a subtle contrast between the design elements and the background, the Persian rug weavers used outlining and contrasting color to bring out individual elements of the design.
The rug features a repeating pattern that is reversed on a horizontal line through the center of the antique carpet. The borders are given equal weight to the field in terms of proportion and space.
