This vibrant, red antique Sultanabad carpet from the turn of the 1900's has tribal characteristics that would make it the perfect addition to Boho-chic or tribal décor style. Sultanabad carpets are known for their rich color and stylized tribal designs. They use traditional motifs such as palmettes, leaves, and other familiar florals, but the weavers give them a unique tribal flavor. This is a beautiful example of the characteristic Sultanabad signature style that makes them so desirable among collectors and designers alike.
The rich red color of this carpet is produced by a unique dye technique where the wool yarn is soaked in madder dye and whey (a cheesemaking byproduct) for two days. The colors of the carpet include deep red, delicate blues, a range of browns, and ivory. Their colors blend in a harmonious way that only plant-based dyes can do.
Sultanabad was established in the early 1800s, which was long after the traditional court weaving centers of the Safavid Dynasty had passed.
