About the Item

Woven by the tribal weavers of the Khamseh Confederacy in southwestern Persia, this mid-19th century long rug is a rare and expressive example of nomadic design. The rug features a bold linear arrangement of latch-hook medallions that run the length of the field, each enclosing small-scale rosettes and tribal emblems. The field is densely decorated with angular floral devices, stylized animal forms, and abstracted tree-of-life motifs, all woven in a palette of madder red, indigo blue, ivory, and soft saffron. The rug is hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, a hallmark of true tribal weaving. Areas of wear and light loss to the ends are consistent with its age and use, but the structure remains stable and the design powerfully legible. The abrash and minor asymmetries throughout the field add to the visual richness and authenticity of the piece. With its compact width and extended length, this runner-style rug would work beautifully in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or layered in an eclectic living space. It brings color, texture, and a strong sense of cultural history to any interior it graces. This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades.
