About the Item

This antique, circa 1880, Persian Bidjar rug has a plain tomato-red field around an indigo-blue lozenge medallion with a gold cusped frame containing charcoal-black spaced hook motifs, enclosing a polychrome herati-pattern with similarly colored bold floral palmettes, the indigo-blue linked and stepped spandrels containing a dense polychrome herati-pattern, in an indigo-blue border of polychrome turtle-palmettes linked by scrolling floral and leafy vine between ivory bold floral vine outer light blue meandering floral vine and plain tomato-red plain stripes. Persian Bidjar rugs, often called the "iron rugs of Persia," are renowned for their exceptional durability and dense weaving. Originating from the Kurdish weavers of Bidjar in western Iran, these rugs feature intricate designs, often with a central medallion, floral motifs, or Herati patterns. They are hand-knotted using a unique wet-weaving technique that compacts the fibers, resulting in a thick, heavy pile resistant to wear. Rich, deep colors like red, blue, and ivory dominate their palette, making Bidjar rugs highly sought after for their beauty and longevity.
