About the Item

Antique Persian Malayer Runner Size: 3'5" × 16'2" (104 × 492 cm) This antique Persian Malayer runner, dating from the early 20th century, is a stunning example of village craftsmanship imbued with refined decorative sensibility. Woven in west-central Iran around 1920, the piece presents an intricate interplay of symmetry, subtle color gradation, and time-softened elegance, all hallmarks of the Malayer weaving tradition. The runner features a series of diamond medallions extending along its length, each densely filled with delicate floral motifs and flanked by stylized leaves and rosettes. The abrashed beige and taupe field—a result of hand-dyeing techniques and natural fading—gives the rug an ethereal, painterly quality, while still preserving the clarity of its geometric and floral elements. The border frames the composition with precision: a main band of angular vine scrolls and stylized blossoms is flanked by narrow guard stripes, lending structure and rhythm to the overall design. The palette, composed of muted browns, sand, soft gray, and olive tones, creates a sophisticated neutrality that complements both traditional and modern interiors. Hand-knotted in fine wool, the runner exhibits excellent craftsmanship with a medium-fine weave and a balanced handle. Its dimensions and linear format make it ideal for hallways, galleries, or staircases, bringing both historic character and understated luxury to the space. Rich in heritage and artistry, this handmade rug exemplifies the high standards of Doris Leslie Blau’s curated pieces. With a wide range of prices, Doris Leslie Blau makes exceptional rugs accessible to collectors and designers alike.
