Late 19th Century Kurdish Rug

About the Item

The Kurds are a relatively autonomous group whose population is concentrated primarily in Turkey, Iraq, and Persia (Iran). They are recognized as being prolific weavers who have produced rugs in a variety of patterns and weaves. Their lifestyles vary, being either nomadic, semi-nomadic (populating small villages), or sedentary by living in urban areas. Persian Kurdistan is a mountainous region to the north of Hamadan in Persia, south of Azerbaijan. This area is recognized as having excellent wool quality, with their weavings utilizing a wide range of saturated dyes in their designs. Kurdish weavers had a high level of control over how their patterns were articulated, resulting in the whimsical character that is often found in their bags, rugs, and runners. This long rug has an ascending shrub pattern on an indigo field within an ivory border having a graphic pattern of rosettes, stylized leaves, and boteh. 9' 11" x 4' 4"
