Mid-20th Century Persian Heriz Throw Rug

About the Item

Heriz scatters are uncommon and this 1940s example packs an entire room size carpet into a scatter format. The crisp madder red field is centered by an irregularly point-lobed navy medallion, within ivory corners and a navy turtle palmette border. The leaves and flowers are drawn in a chunky semi-geometric manner characteristic of the Heriz weaving area Hand-knotted in Persia Wool One-of-a-kind Measures: 3' 8" x 4' 11"

Heriz Rug, Mid-20th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Heriz Rug, Mid-20th Century Heriz rugs and carpets were woven in Northwest Persia starting in the mid 19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were not rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular to this day. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century. What was once one of the least expensive...
