About the Item

This remarkable Sultanabad wool oversize rug is more than just a floor covering; it is a genuine work of art and a testament to centuries of rich Turkish weaving traditions. Measuring an impressive 13 feet 2 inches by 17 feet (158 inches x 204 inches), this generously proportioned masterpiece is ideally sized to anchor and transform the grandest of living rooms, expansive dining halls, or opulent master suites. Its commanding presence and intricate design instantly elevate any substantial space, imparting a sense of established grandeur and refined taste that truly defines luxury. Meticulously hand-knotted from 100% premium, lustrous wool, this rug offers a luxurious blend of exceptional softness underfoot and unparalleled durability, ensuring it remains a cherished heirloom for generations to come. The rug's substantial and inviting estimated thickness of approximately 0.4 to 0.6 inches (1 to 1.5 cm) speaks volumes about its robust, artisan-crafted construction, promising superior underfoot comfort and longevity. With an estimated weight of 200 to 250 pounds (90 to 113 kg), this rug's impressive density guarantees excellent sound absorption, superior insulation, and long-lasting resilience, making it perfectly suited for high-traffic, prominent areas within your home. The Enduring Legacy of Sultanabad Design – A Tapestry of Classic Artistry: This exquisite oversize rug embodies the revered Sultanabad design, a style that transcends mere pattern to become a profound artistic statement, rooted deeply in classical Persian weaving traditions yet beautifully adapted and produced in Turkey for appreciative global markets. The design of this rug is its very soul, characterized by an exquisitely harmonious blend of bold, stylized floral motifs, majestic central medallions, and sweeping, curvilinear arabesque patterns, all artfully distributed across its expansive field. Unlike more densely packed traditional Persian rugs, the Sultanabad design is universally celebrated for its more open, grand, and spacious layout, which thoughtfully allows individual motifs to breathe and command attention, creating an elegant rhythm that guides the eye gracefully across the entire rug. This specific rug masterfully showcases the quintessential tribal style, where the design feels organic, beautifully spontaneous, and imbued with a captivating, slightly rustic charm that powerfully tells a multi-generational story of ancient traditions and the skilled hands of artisan weavers. Every intricate motif and border element within the design is meticulously crafted, from the repeating floral sprays that symbolize growth and prosperity to the often complex geometric or vine-patterned main border that impeccably frames the vast central field. A Palpable Historical Connection and Authentic Craftsmanship: The enduring design and the characteristics of this rug offer a tangible and fascinating connection to its historical period, as it likely dates back to the 1920s to 1940s. This era marked a flourishing time for the production of these magnificent pieces. During this specific era, Sultanabad designs were in extremely high demand, prized for their ability to exquisitely combine timeless classical motifs with a softer, more accessible, and gracefully faded aesthetic that perfectly resonated with Western tastes for antique and handcrafted goods. The particular scale, color application, and unique interpretation of the motifs in this oversize rug are highly indicative of its genuine vintage, reflecting the evolving design sensibilities of the time while steadfastly maintaining a timeless and universal appeal. This exceptional rug not only profoundly beautifies a space but also serves as a living historical artifact, preserving the rich artistic legacy of a bygone era and immeasurably enriching your home with a piece of tangible cultural heritage. A Luminous Color Palette - Illuminating the Grand Design: The captivating and exceptionally versatile color palette of this Sultanabad area rug is a masterful blend that, while primarily listed as "Ivory," reveals a deeply sophisticated and multi-tonal tapestry of subtle hues upon closer inspection. The dominant and overarching hue is a magnificent Creamy Ivory, which forms the vast majority of the rug's field and primary background. This is not a stark white, but rather a warm, inviting, and aged ivory, carrying subtle undertones of beige and sometimes a hint of soft gray, lending it a timeless character. This extensive use of ivory creates a luminous and expansive feel, brightening any room and serving as an incredibly versatile canvas for various interior styles. Interspersed throughout the intricate patterns are beautiful accents of Soft, Muted Blues, ranging from a pale sky blue to a very light, almost dusty teal or a subtle periwinkle. These blues appear in delicate floral motifs, intricate border patterns, and sometimes geometric outlines, adding a refreshing coolness and serene contrast against the dominant ivory. Adding an organic and refreshing touch, hints of Pale Greens (such as muted sage or olive tones) are subtly woven into the design, often found in stylized leaf elements and meandering vine work. They contribute to the rug's natural charm and provide a gentle counterpoint to warmer tones. Providing delicate points of warmth, vitality, and antique charm are splashes of Muted Terracotta Reds and Faded Oranges. These inviting hues, appearing in small floral centers, delicate blossoms, or subtle outlines of medallions, are not overtly bright but possess a charming, sun-faded quality, reminiscent of aged earthenware. Subtle touches of light browns, earthy beiges, and occasional hints of deeper, muted tones are also skillfully used for outlining or adding textural depth within patterns, seamlessly integrating into the overall harmonious scheme and enriching the rug's aged appeal. This thoughtful and layered integration of diverse, yet harmoniously toned, colors ensures the rug feels profoundly organic, naturally aged, and incredibly dynamic, perfectly complementing and illuminating the classic Sultanabad design. A Prized Addition for Persian & Sultanabad Rug Collections: As a distinguished member of both the renowned Persian Rugs and Sultanabad Rugs collections, this oversize rug holds significant artistic, cultural, and undeniable investment value within the world of antique textiles. Its design is a classic example of the Sultanabad style, highly sought after by discerning collectors and passionate interior designers globally. Investing in this rug means acquiring not just a functional item for your floor, but a genuine piece of textile history – a tangible connection to the skilled hands and artistic visions of a bygone era, bringing a rich narrative and an unparalleled design statement into your home. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to infuse your living space with enduring beauty, profound character, and an authentic sense of global heritage, ensuring it remains a captivating conversation piece and a continuous source of aesthetic delight and appreciation for many years to come.

Ivory Field Antique Heriz Serapi Rug
Located in New York, NY
A stunning early 20th century Heriz Serapi rug. Heriz rugs are Persian rugs from the area of Heris, East Azerbaijan in northwest Iran, northeast of Tabriz. Such rugs are produced in the village of the same name in the slopes of Mount Sabalan. Heriz carpets are extremely durable and hard-wearing and they can last for generations. 19th century examples of such carpets are often found on sale by major auction houses in United States and Europe. New Herizes are thick, tough, and often reasonable in price. Such rugs age well and become more and more beautiful with age. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan sits on a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas.[citation needed] Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory. Heriz rugs are of coarse construction. The rugs range from 30 kpsi on the low end to 100 10 kpsi on the high end. It is rare to see a rug over 100 kpsi that would look like an authentic Heriz unless it is an antique silk Heriz.
