About the Item

75598 Vintage Persian Mashhad Rug, 10’01 x 15’10. This hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Mashhad rug is an exquisite example of traditional Persian artistry, featuring a mesmerizing design that speaks to both elegance and history. At the center lies a grand 16-point Mashhad medallion, its cusped shape radiating a sense of balance and harmony. Flanked by cartouche-style palmette finials at each end, the medallion is enveloped by bouquets of blooming flowers, creating a lively and rich floral arrangement that anchors the composition. These vibrant elements are set against a deep, warm backdrop, enhancing the visual impact of the central design and exuding a sense of grandeur. Surrounding the central medallion, the field is bordered by complementary spandrels, which create an arabesque frame that elegantly encloses the rug’s design. The spandrels mirror the floral motifs found within the medallion, further emphasizing the interconnectedness of the design and the intricate craftsmanship. The meticulous details of these motifs draw the eye in, inviting admiration for the precision with which each knot is tied and each floral pattern rendered. The border of this Mashhad rug features the classic Shah Abbas design, a signature element of Mashhad weaving that brings a regal and refined quality to the piece. The main border is flanked by meandering rosette guard borders, which add movement and fluidity to the overall design, seamlessly guiding the viewer’s gaze from the central medallion to the edges. These guard borders, adorned with a delicate arrangement of rosettes, provide a sense of balance and continuity to the piece. Additional subsidiary guard bands frame the design with understated elegance, creating layers of visual depth and enriching the rug's intricate details. The interplay of these borders and the central medallion creates a dynamic yet harmonious composition, ensuring that every element is both meaningful and beautifully integrated. Crafted with exceptional skill, this vintage Persian Mashhad rug embodies the timeless beauty of Persian rug-making traditions. Its vibrant color palette, featuring deep reds, rich blues, and soft ivories, enhances the visual allure while maintaining a balance of warmth and sophistication. The rug’s elegant design is a true testament to the artistic mastery and cultural significance of Persian rugs, making it a treasured piece that has the power to transform any space. With its intricate design, fine craftsmanship, and rich historical roots, this Mashhad rug is not only a functional work of art but also a captivating reflection of Persian culture. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
