Antique Turkish Oushak Rug 8'8 x 11'6
Located in New York, NY
Antique Turkish Oushak Rug 8'8 x 11'6. Oushak's are known for their soft palettes combined with eccentric drawing. Oushak in western Turkey has the longest continuous rug weaving history, stretching back at least to the mid-fifteenth century. It has always been oriented commercially, supplying rugs and carpets, from scatters up to enormous mansion sizes, to both the Turkish/Ottoman domestic markets and to exports into Britain, and America. The best-known family portrait of George Washington has an Oushak beneath the Founder and his family. Doesn’t get more esteemed than that. Of course, the carpets have constantly changed as tastes, trends, styles, and markets evolved. In the late 19th/early 20th centuries, Persian or Persianate patterns were adopted, and dimensions mutated into Western room sizes. From the early years of the Ottoman Empire to the end of the 13th century, Oushak became an important center of Turkish carpet production. All this changed after the mid-nineteenth century, when Oushak became a major manufacturing center again due to the extensive revival of Turkish and Persian Oriental carpet production. The large and growing middle class in Europe and the United States suddenly created a new demand for oriental antique carpets, and like many other historic carpet manufacturing centers today, Oushak has rapidly developed to meet this demand. At the end of the 19th century, the production of Oriental carpets resumed, during which time Oushak once again became an outstanding center of the textile industry. This center is credited with many of the great masterpieces of early Turkish carpet weaving from the 15th to 17th centuries. Oushak was one of the largest cities in Anatolia and became one of the central carpet weaving centers from the 15th to the 20th century. The luxurious quality of the wool (for which Oushak's have always been famous) contributed to the vibrancy of the colors. Unlike most Turkish rugs, Oushak rugs were heavily influenced by Persian design. Many depictions of ancient oriental carpets in old western paintings appear to be styles designed and woven in Oushak. Many people look at Oushak rugs for their history and ancient value, but even in today's world of carpet weaving, there are countless Oushak rugs that truly convey the original aesthetic and sense of timeless ancient design. You will fall in love with our Oushak rugs, featuring bold floral designs and many other antique details. Originating in the city of Oushak in central western Anatolia, Turkish Oushak rugs display a mesmerizing Persian influence, making them one of the most popular types of antique rugs...
