About the Item

Rya Rug "Ädelsten" ("Gemstone" in english) by Gull-Britt Johansson, handmade by Nordiska Industri in the 1960s. This rare and exquisite rya rug features a bold ruby-inspired palette of three red tones: an inner ring with vibrant red pile, a middle ring in bordeaux red, and an outermost ring in mauve. This is only the second known example of the "Ädelsten" design, the first featuring an aquamarine color scheme. This stunning mid-century modern rya rug, crafted by the skilled Swedish textile artist in the 1960s, showcases the elegance and mastery of Scandinavian craftsmanship. Handmade from high-quality "Kamgarn" Persian wool on a cotton-linen foundation, it features a luxurious, high-pile texture that adds both comfort and style. This Scandinavian rya rug’s warm tones and unique design bring character and sophistication to any space. A timeless piece of 1960s Swedish textile art, it’s ideal for adding a cozy, artful touch to any interior. ABOUT GULL BRITT JOHANSSON Gull-Britt Johanson, born 1933 in Säffle, Värmland, hails from an artistic family and has dedicated her life to art, beginning as a textile designer before transitioning to painting. She studied at Konstfack in Stockholm and the School of Applied Arts in Gothenburg, where she met architect Lars-Gunnar Johansson, the father of her children. Inspired by Lapland’s vivid colors, she freelanced in Malmö, designing rugs for Ege Taepper in Copenhagen. In the late 1960s, she worked internationally, collaborating with Karl Eybl in Austria, with her rugs reaching markets in the U.S. and Japan. In 1973, after relocating to Geneva and Paris, she shifted from textiles to visual art due to the 1970s textile crisis. ABOUT NIAB Nordiska Industriaktiebolaget (NIAB), a Swedish design company, was founded in Gothenburg in 1895 by August Johansson. Initially located on Södra Hamngatan and Kyrkogatan, NIAB specialized in pattern design and textile sales, expanding to include other addresses. Estrid Fischer directed the pattern studio from 1895 to 1935, working alongside noted artists like Gull-Britt Johanson, Hulda Hedenborg, and Agneta Goës. NIAB held annual textile exhibitions in Gothenburg and became known for its collaborations with talented designers, contributing significantly to Sweden's design heritage.
