About the Item

A classically designed Aubusson rug with designs of flowers, foliage, and scrolls surrounded by a pink border. Aubusson carpets are pileless and woven in the same way as tapestries. Situated on the banks of the River Creuse in France, Aubusson had been well-known for producing tapestries for centuries. It is said that they were weaving in Aubusson as early as the 8th century. However, only in 1743, when the King's Council established a carpet factory in Aubusson, the rugs became known as Aubussons. They were produced by independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. At the time, only French nobility could afford Aubussons; they placed them in their Chateaux or gifted them to foreign dignitaries. At the beginning of the French Revolution, Aubusson rug production was almost completely shut down, as they were a sign of luxury. Many were destroyed or sold overseas. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical, or Victorian, never oriental. The pattern wefts are wool with silk or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Light colors are the most popular, with dark-toned pieces being rare. Aubussons are more commonly used in traditional settings; however, they will also look fabulous in contemporary and modern scapes. This rug has been professionally cleaned.
