About the Item

An evocative pair of early 20th-century Art Nouveau area rugs, likely of Viennese origin, each featuring a stylized floral design inspired by the Vienna Secession. Executed in a flatwoven tapestry technique with cotton backing, the rugs display undulating botanical forms bordered by a classic Greek Key motif—blending the organic elegance of Art Nouveau with the structure of neoclassical design. These rugs reflect the influence of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop), the influential Viennese design collective founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. The stylized floral motifs and geometric framing echo the design vocabulary championed by the Werkstätte, which emphasized the integration of fine and decorative arts through craftsmanship and modernist refinement. Subtle variations in fading and tone distinguish the pair: the larger rug presents with a more softened and atmospheric palette, while the smaller retains a slightly crisper appearance. Their visual harmony and shared origin make them ideal for use as coordinating hall runners, layered accent pieces, or mounted textiles. Dimensions: Larger rug: 8'3" L × 3'7" W (251.5 × 109 cm) Smaller rug: 5'11" L × 3'6" W (180 × 106.5 cm) Condition: Fair condition with visible signs of wear, including fading, staining, thread pulls, and discoloration. The larger rug is more faded. Both structurally stable and suitable for decorative use. Provenance: An Important Private Collection: Southampton, NY Note: Offered as a pair. May be available individually upon request—please inquire for separate pricing. Style Note: Ideal for collectors or designers seeking period textiles with Viennese Art Nouveau character. These versatile pieces work beautifully in historical, bohemian, or contemporary interiors.

21st C. Pale French Savonnerie Style Wool Carpet with Foliate Vine Pattern
By Savonnerie
Located in Morristown, NJ
21st C. French Savonnerie style wool carpet. The design is a foliate vine pattern in gold, light green and brown tones on a cream ground. The border has a rust ground with a geometric pattern of alternating stylized wheatsheaf and leaf design. Unmarked. About Savonnerie Carpets: French pile floor covering, usually large, whether made at the Savonnerie workshop or made in that manner and style. The Savonnerie factory (on the site of a former soap factory, hence the name) was established in Paris in 1627 at the Hospice de la Savonnerie at Chaillot by royal order, to provide pile carpets for use in the king’s palaces and as royal gifts. Subject to interruptions from time to time, this shop has provided carpets, seat covers, and similar weavings ever since, at first for the French court and then for government buildings. The patterns are floral and architectural Renaissance conceptions, many based upon paintings and cartoons by the same artists who designed the Gobelins tapestries. In 1826, the enterprises having been combined, the Savonnerie production was moved into the Gobelins workshops, near Paris. The styles of ornamentation have varied with the tastes of the passing reigns and regimes until in recent years the abstract or surrealist creations of modern painters have, in their turn, been reflected in the Savonnerie rugs. The various Savonnerie fashions have exercised a powerful influence upon the patterns of other Western carpet workshops. Dimensions: Approx. 105"l x 87"w Condition: Good, minor fading and discoloration. Shows well. Note: All rugs and carpets...
