The Jerusalem Academy of Fine Arts english: Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design) is a Jerusalem high school for art education, named after the biblical character "Bezalel, son of Uri. The institute was founded in 1906 by Jewish-Lithuanian professor Boris Schatz (formerly among the founders of the "Royal Academy of Art in Sofia") as a Jewish-Eastern center for the development of applied arts and crafts in Palestine. Theodor Herzl and early Zionists were among the proponents of a national art style that included Jewish-Eastern and European traditions. The masters of "Bezalel" then developed a distinct mode of art, known as the Bezalel school, which dealt with portraying biblical subjects.

This exquisite early-twentieth-century carpet was produced in Alcaraz, Spain. This carpet is an excellent example of the formal mandate to develop a distinctively Spanish style of artwork. It is an allover design that is in cream and green. The pink border sets the carpet off. Alcaraz is a region in Southern Castile and is thought to be one of the first centres to produce these new designs. The colours of the antique Spanish rugs became muted due to experimentation with new dyestuffs. Also, the skill of the Moorish master carpet dyers was lost. Many of these antique Alcaraz carpets...
