Hand knotted in wool circa 1940-50, this 6x9 antique Karl Gries tapestry is an especially rare and exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim’s collection of European narrative textiles.
On the Design:
Dating to the 1940s, this piece exemplifies the refined pictorial weaving that distinguished German textile workshops during the mid-20th century, where traditional European hunting iconography achieved artistic expression through the tapestry technique. The central equestrian figure dominates the design, surrounded by hunting hounds and elaborate foliate borders. The central mounted hunter, positioned in three-quarter profile, wears period costume featuring a feathered cap with elaborate plume detailing and flowing robes that cascade dramatically around the horse's flanks. The equestrian pose captures dynamic movement—the horse rearing with forelegs elevated, mane flowing, demonstrating masterful understanding of equine anatomy and motion.
The lower section teems with hunting hounds in various animated poses—some pursuing quarry, others in alert stance, their bodies rendered with anatomical precision that reveals individual breed characteristics. The elaborate border features dense foliate scrollwork with acanthus leaf motifs, grape clusters, and intertwined vine patterns. The upper section includes atmospheric landscape elements with stylized trees and clouded sky rendered through subtle tonal gradations.
